I thought I knew how to work with computers but I only used basic skills such as checking emails and searching for articles. I really needed to upgrade my computer skills and ICT literacy to get a job again after graduating IGSE. That’s why I took ICT Literacy, which is taught by Professor Young-woo, Kim. I had heard about IT (Information Technology) before, but never heard about ICT (Information and Communication Technologies). In other words, I knew almost nothing about ICT. However, due to the Professor’s detailed guidelines, I’ve learned a lot in this class.

1. Class textbooks and supplements

There isn’t a set textbook for this class. The professor uploads materials on the Moodle site each week. All you need to do is read them before the class and install a software program when needed. One important thing to remember is that you should bring your own laptop to each class. Students learn how to use certain programs and have time to practice with their own laptop in class.

2. How the class progresses

Students learn how to use one or two software programs each class. After that, they should complete assignments using the skills. The first class was about getting to know more about my computer and how to back up data. After that, I learned about Moodle— a website which is an online learning management system. It is the platform all IGSEans use for classes. I learned how to use the site as a student and how to run classes through the Moodle website as a teacher. In addition, I’ve also learned practical and useful tips on how to use mind-maps, how to write a CV letter and e-portfolio, and how to do image editing. I became better able to use basic programs such as PowerPoint and Excel to Corpus and Epup programs. These are all practical tools not only to study at IGSE but also to get a job afterwards.

One of the best parts of the class was the 'snacks' that Professor Kim provided. He said the snacks were to lower students’ anxiety level and it really worked. He sometimes bought different kinds of snacks that no one had tasted before. All students enjoyed them and were curious where he bought them! Before the term finished, we went to Insa-dong together and had time to appreciate the art exhibitions. In the last class, we enjoyed watching the video clips that all the students had created and exchanged feedback; having snacks and drinks at the same time, of course.

3. Assignments and tasks
There are weekly assignments such as analyzing your own computer specifications, records of your data backup, and image editing skills were presented as assignments. It was more like practicing the skills again, and it was not that burdensome. For the final project, we were asked to make a video incorporating all the skills that were taught through the semester from screen capturing to audio-editing programs. It may seem difficult at a glance but you will have enough time and chance to practice the skills in the class. You don’t need to worry about the assignments.

4. I strongly recommend this class to people who…
  •  mainly use computer for email checking and want to do more with it
  •   want to produce creative contents using ICT
